THEME: HEAR AND DO

Mark‬ ‭4:20‬ ‭‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

“But these are the ones sown on good ground, those who hear the word, accept it, and bear fruit: some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some a hundred.”

INSIGHT
-The parable of the sower outlines the different conditions of hearts that receive the word of God. The Bible tells us that we should guard our hearts with all diligence for out of it springs issues of life (Proverbs 4:23). The condition of the heart is vital to how one receives the Word of God, and the effect that it makes in one’s life. One group hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, thus the wicked one comes and snatches away what was sown in the heart. This is the seed that is sown by the wayside. Another group hears the word and immediately receives it with joy; yet has no root in themselves, but endures only for a while. When tribulation or persecution arises because of the word, they immediately stumbles for the seed is planted on stony hearts. The group that hears the word and is unfruitful, the cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches choke it, and he for the word is sown on thorny ground. The last group hears the word and understands it, receive seed on the good ground and bears fruit and produces: some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty (Matthew‬ ‭13:19-23). ‬ ‭‬‬

SUMMARY
Hearing and doing the Word of God is the way to spiritual growth. It is horrid to just hear and not do what the Word of God says. James‬ ‭4:17‬ ‭‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬tells us that the one who hears and knows what to do but does not do it, to him it is sin. James previously quotes that the one who hears the Word and not do it is like a person who looks at himself/herself in a mirror and forgets the kind of person he was. When our inner desires correspond to outward enticement, sin is spawned. Hearing and doing God’s word is a personal responsibility, for we are called to resist the devil and he will flee from us (James 4:7). Also it takes the grace of God to do as per His will. Hearing and doing the Word of God has numerous benefits. Firstly, it is accompanied with a blessing (James 1:25, Psalms 1:1-3). Secondly, hearing and doing as per God’s Word causes a closer and more personal relationship with Jesus. John‬ ‭15:14-15‬ ‭‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬tells us that, “you are My friends if you do whatever I command you”. Further that, “my mother and My brothers are these who hear the word of God and do it” (Luke‬ ‭8:21‬‬‬). Thirdly, hearing and doing the Word of God rewards with fruit. When one’s heart is well prepared and ready to do as per the word, some bear thirty fold, others sixty fold and a hundred fold (Mark‬ ‭4:20). Forth, hearing and doing God’s word is a display of wisdom from God. The one who performs the word is compared to a builder who builds upon the Rock who is Jesus Christ (Matthew‬ ‭7:24-27‬). ‭‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬
