THEME: PRIDE PRECEDES DOWNFALL

Philippians 2:5-11 NKJV

“Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

INSIGHT

–Jesus humbled Himself to the point of death, and was exalted high above all the angels, every human being, and above every physical and spiritual being. All creation bows down before Him and none can stand before Him.

SUMMARY

In Greek, pride is written as hubris and gaon in Hebrew which denotes excessive arrogance that often times leads to a downfall. Satan is the king over all the children of pride (Job 41:34). Satan desired in his heart to be like God and muttered, “I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; I will also sit on the mount of the congregation On the farthest sides of the north; I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High” (Isaiah 14:13-14). Satan was dethroned as an anointed cherub in the Garden of Eden, due to pride and desire for power, he was corrupted and cast out by God (Ezekiel 28:12-17). Like Satan, king Nebuchadnezzar took pride in his kingdom for it had grown and developed in power, honor and majesty. He became like a beast eating grass like oxen, his body was wet with the dew of heaven till his hair had grown like eagles’ feathers and his nails like birds’ claws. When understand came to him he repented and praised God the Most High and his kingdom restored to him (Daniel 4:28-37). A rich man also took pride in his riches and thought of building bigger bans to accommodate his crop. In this parable God required his soul in heaven that same night (Luke 12:16-21). Another expression of a prideful heart is self-righteousness. Jesus tells a parable of a Pharisee and tax collector went to the temple. While the Pharisee stood and prayed taking pride in his good deeds, the tax collector, repented and he was justified (Luke 18:10-14).

PRAYER

Dear Lord Jesus, Your unfailing love is better than life itself, we praise You. We will praise You as long as we live, lifting up our hands to You in prayer. You satisfy us more than the richest feast. We will praise You with songs of joy. Lord You are worthy of our praise, and You save us from our enemies. Lord You turn our mourning into joyful dancing. You taken away our clothes of mourning and clothed us with joy, that we might sing praises to You and not be silent. O Lord our God, we will give You thanks forever. May You forgive us every sin of pride and cleanse us from unrighteousness. Dear Lord Jesus may Your heart replace ours, Your thoughts replace ours, You speech replace ours, You eyes replace ours, Your ears replace ours, that we may be more like. May You grant us the fill us with the fruit of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, humility and self-control. By Your grace we shall always overcome the snares of sin, satan and death. We are more than conquers in You Christ Jesus. We are more than victorious by Your precious blood and the word of our testimony. May You grant each household the gift of salvation through faith in You Jesus Christ. May You grant us and all people Your gift of eternal life dear Jesus, that we may resurrect in the Day of You Lord. Dear Lord Jesus may You do exceedingly abundantly more than we can ask of or think of according to the power that is at work in us. Lord we trust in You and exalt You. We believe that You are able to do more than we can think of or imagine. We believe that we shall be extremely fruitful since we abide in You and You in us. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow us all the days of our lives and we shall dwell in Your house forever. May You bless us and keep us loving Father, may You shine Your face upon us and be gracious to us. May You lift up Your countenance towards us and give us peace. Amen
