THEME: THE DUALITY LIFESTYLE

Judges 16:1-3

“One day Samson went to Gaza, where he saw a prostitute. He went in to spend the night with her. The people of Gaza were told, “Samson is here!” So they surrounded the place and lay in wait for him all night at the city gate. They made no move during the night, saying, “At dawn we’ll kill him.” But Samson lay there only until the middle of the night. Then he got up and took hold of the doors of the city gate, together with the two posts, and tore them loose, bar and all. He lifted them to his shoulders and carried them to the top of the hill that faces Hebron.”

INSIGHT

-Duality is like looking at two sides of the same coin. Duality is a lifestyle that is characterized by living in both the light and darkness, and equating them as one. Samson lived a duality lifestyle. He was born at a time when the Israelites suffered oppression for forty years under the oppressive Philistine masters. Being a Nazarite, he was prohibited from drinking any fermented drink or eating anything unclean. Even though he did not defile himself in this way, it was know even to the Philistines that his weakness was women. They attempted to trap him when he slept with a harlot, but managed to escape at midnight. When someone lives a duality lifestyle, he or she normally lives in both the light and darkness. As a judge, Samson managed to destroy multitudes of Philistines as we see in Judges 15:8. Knowing his weakness very well, the Philistine leaders paid Delilah to trap Samson and he revealed to her his source of power. Samson the mighty warrior was captured and taken to prison. When the Philistines gave an offering to Dagon their god for their victory in capturing Samson, the Lord restored his strength and he destroyed more people than he ever did before (Judges 16:30). Like Samson, we might have compromise and lived duality lifestyles in one way or another. 1 John 1:5-7 reminds us that, “..God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin”. The Lord is gracious and kind and calls each one of us to return to Him in true repentance.
