THEME: LOVE OF CHRIST
Luke 10:25-37
“And behold, a certain lawyer stood up and tested Him, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” He said to him, “What is written in the law? What is your reading of it? ” So he answered and said, “ ‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind,’ and ‘your neighbor as yourself.’ ” And He said to him, “You have answered rightly; do this and you will live.” But he, wanting to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” Then Jesus answered and said: “A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, who stripped him of his clothing, wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. Now by chance a certain priest came down that road. And when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. Likewise a Levite, when he arrived at the place, came and looked, and passed by on the other side. But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was. And when he saw him, he had compassion. So he went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; and he set him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. On the next day, when he departed, he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said to him, ‘Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I come again, I will repay you.’ So which of these three do you think was neighbor to him who fell among the thieves?” And he said, “He who showed mercy on him.” Then Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.””
INSIGHT
-The parable of the good Samaritan demonstrates the law of love, that each one is called to love the LORD our God with all our heart and with all our soul and with all our strength and with all our mind; and to love our neighbors as ourselves. From the parable we also see that both Jesus and the lawyer connect certain concepts, faith in Christ, keeping the commandments, character development through our walk with and in God, and our focus on Jesus as we follow Him. Since Jesus has loved us with an everlasting kind of love, He calls us to spread His love to one another; like the good Samaritan.
SUMMARY
God is the true definition of love, for God is love. His nature and image is built on love, and as such He created us. He existed at the beginning of love and with be present forever, for His love endures forever. We have firm faith in Him therefore, knowing that nothing in heaven or on earth can separate us from His love. Christ has shown us sacrificial love through His death on the cross for the sins of the world. He has also given us lavish love when we did not deserve anything, He adopted us as His children. It is in His nature that He has given us great love that radiates through us to one another, that we may continue in brotherly love (Hebrews 13:1). The parable of the good Samaritan demonstrates the law of love, as Christ has loved us graciously and given us the grace to love Him with all our hearts, minds, souls and strength, by keeping His word, and to love one another as ourselves. The parable challenged the lawyer and teaches us that we should love our neighbors as ourselves by helping one another at their time of need, which is a display of the love of God. I John 3:17-18 reveals that, “But whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him? My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth.” As Christ loves us with immense and immeasurable love, let us then love our neighbors as ourselves, giving preference to one another.
