Genesis 31:48-50
And Laban said, “This heap is a witness between you and me this day.” Therefore its name was called Galeed, also Mizpah, because he said, “May the Lord watch between you and me when we are absent one from another. If you afflict my daughters, or if you take other wives besides my daughters, although no man is with us—see, God is witness between you and me!”
INSIGHT
-In Hebrew, witness is written as ed & it means testify, attest, give evidence, affirm
-Jacob & Laban set up a covenant in form of a heap of stones as witness (Galeed/Mizpah) that Jacob will not hurt Laban’s daughters & will not take any other wives. Further, neither of them should cross to the either side of the heap to cause harm to the other. Laban acclaimed that God is witness between them. Jacob then offered a peace offering & they took bread together as a sign of peace.
PRAYER
May we always be at peace in our homes, places of work & nations, Lord, for Your mercy endures forever. Watch over us & protect us from those who cause us pain. Amen
