THEME: ANALOGY OF THE WELL
John 4:5-10 NKJV
“So He came to a city of Samaria which is called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. Now Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied from His journey, sat thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour. A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give Me a drink.” For His disciples had gone away into the city to buy food. Then the woman of Samaria said to Him, “How is it that You, being a Jew, ask a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?” For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans. Jesus answered and said to her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.”
INSIGHT
-Jesus interacted with the Samaritan woman which seem unusual to her due to their differences in origin and cultural background. At the well of water is where all converge to be refreshed and quench their thirst, both the young and the old, the rich and the poor, the educated and uneducated, both Jews and Greek. As Jesus pointed out to the Samaritan woman, He is the source of the living water and when we believe in Him, rivers of living water flow within us and they never run dry.
SUMMARY
Well in Hebrew is written as ‘beer’ or ‘ain which is a deep cylindrical shaft, bore far under the rocky surface which contains water that percolates through the strata. Isaac’s servants dug a well and found water, and he named it Beersheba which is its name to date (Genesis 26:32-33). The well is a symbol of prosperity and productivity for man, his livestock and crops. When Hagar was ejected from Abraham’s house, she walked with her son Ishmael through the desert and ran out of water. They became so desperate and at the point of death, the Lord heard her sons prayer and He showed her a well at Beersheba (Genesis 21:15-19). While drilling of wells, it is at the rock bottom where water is found. Sometimes when we have tried all solutions of deliverance it is when we submit to God, and He hears us and delivers us. It is at the well in Midian where Moses found his wife Zipporah. Isaac’s wife Rebecca, was also found at the well in Canaan. It is at the well where a virtuous woman is found, in the presence of God. Jesus invites all people from different backgrounds, orientation and races to come to Him and believe in Him, and He will give us the living water that is never quenched.
