THEME: FALL OF MAN

Genesis 4:6-8

“So the Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry? And why has your countenance fallen? If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it.” Now Cain talked with Abel his brother; and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him.”

INSIGHT

-The seed of Adam was the first casualty of his fall. Cain, Adam first born son whose name means “here he is”, out of anger killed Abel his brother. Abel’s name means “breath or temporary” probably named so since his life was to be cut short. Although God cautioned Cain that sin was lying at his door and he should master it, he could not control his anger. Cain could not stop at a warning, his sacrifice was not acceptable probably because of his lack of faith. Hebrews 11:4 reveals that, “by faith Abel brought God a better offering than Cain did. By faith he was commended as righteous, when God spoke well of his offerings. And by faith Abel still speaks, even though he is dead.” Cain could not wait for the sun to go down, before he killed his brother Abel, whose blood continues to speak. Such is a common narrative in our society today. Brother kills brother, spouse kills the other, father or son kills the entire family etc. Anger and bitterness is a ticking time bomb that seeks to explode anyone who comes too close. The Bible says in Ephesians 4:26-27, that “Be angry, and do not sin”: do not let the sun go down on your wrath, nor give place to the devil.” Cain could not spare his own brother probably because the condition of his heart was not right before the Lord and he failed to forgive. Unforgiveness becomes a major root cause of such atrocities and a total failure of one to partake of God’s grace. Jesus calls us to forgive each other seventy times seven times (Matthew 18:22). And cautions us from unforgiveness says that, “if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses” (Matthew 6:14-15).
