THEME: WINNING WITHOUT FIGHTING

Luke 5:4-8

“When He had stopped speaking, He said to Simon, “Launch out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” But Simon answered and said to Him, “Master, we have toiled all night and caught nothing; nevertheless at Your word I will let down the net.” And when they had done this, they caught a great number of fish, and their net was breaking. So they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. When Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord!”

INSIGHT

-The month of June is characterized by the number six which is Biblically, the number of man. Man was created on the sixth day in the image and likeness of God, and instructed to be fruitful, multiply and fill the earth, and to have dominion over all the creatures. It was only after the creation of man that such a decree was issued for there was no one to cultivate the land and keep it. Therefore, man was created to have dominion over all the creatures of the earth. Despite the decree to have dominion on the earth, some men and women live defeated lives in certain areas. Some fight too hard with their physical strength and forget to rely on Jesus Christ who conquered all for us. It is important to note that; winning spiritual battles without fighting does not negate the effectiveness of weapons of war. Even though Peter, one of Jesus’ disciples was mostly with Him, he had shipwreck faith. Peter and the other fishermen had toiled all night and caught nothing. When Jesus came to teach, He preferred to sit on Peter’s boat probably to heal his heart and bless him. It is likely that Peter thought that this was a waste of time for him to lower the nets given the hour; at Jesus’ instructions. Even though Peter lowered one net, he was hesitant and eventually amazed by the great catch that caused the net to break. Peter realized that he had doubted Jesus which he translated as sin. With Jesus on Peter’s boat, he won in the area of divine productivity and increased faith without fighting. We know that we without faith we cannot please God (Hebrews 6:11). To be fruitful therefore, we need to rely on Jesus Christ and trust Him wholeheartedly. Many challenges and hardships may come our way but we are called to rely on Jesus through strong faith and we will win our even battles without fighting.
