THEME: PROFIT IN GOD’S KINGDOM
Proverbs 31:10-29
“Who can find a virtuous wife? For her worth is far above rubies. The heart of her husband safely trusts her; So he will have no lack of gain. She does him good and not evil All the days of her life. She seeks wool and flax, And willingly works with her hands. She is like the merchant ships, She brings her food from afar. She also rises while it is yet night, And provides food for her household, And a portion for her maidservants. She considers a field and buys it; From her profits she plants a vineyard. She girds herself with strength, And strengthens her arms. She perceives that her merchandise is good, And her lamp does not go out by night. She stretches out her hands to the distaff, And her hand holds the spindle. She extends her hand to the poor, Yes, she reaches out her hands to the needy. She is not afraid of snow for her household, For all her household is clothed with scarlet. She makes tapestry for herself; Her clothing is fine linen and purple. Her husband is known in the gates, When he sits among the elders of the land. She makes linen garments and sells them, And supplies sashes for the merchants. Strength and honor are her clothing; She shall rejoice in time to come. She opens her mouth with wisdom, And on her tongue is the law of kindness. She watches over the ways of her household, And does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children rise up and call her blessed; Her husband also, and he praises her: “Many daughters have done well, But you excel them all.
INSIGHT
-Prophet Elisha introduced entrepreneurship to a widow who was almost being auctioned. The threat of slavery also loomed at her two boys and she desperately needed help. Elisha clearly instructed them to go to every household and borrow jars of oil, and cautioned them against limiting their expectations. They collected all that they could find and Elisha performed a multiplication miracle, where they filled all the jars with olive oil. He then instructed them to go sell the oil, pay their creditors and live on the balance (2 Kings 4:1-6). In the same way, we find a wise, aggressive entrepreneur labeled as the virtuous woman. She fears God and takes her rightful place in the family and society. Her husband trusts her and her speech is defined by wisdom. She displays hard work and dedication in all her duties. She is respected by her children, husband and society, and her husband is honored because of her wisdom. When she realizes profit, she does not waste it away but buys a vineyard, and ensures that there is enough food in her entire household. She not only provides for her family, but also gives to the poor and needy in the society. We have seen virtuous women emerge leaders in resent times. Their stories are almost similar, characterized by hard work, dedication and the fear of God. We draw a valuable lesson from the story of the virtuous woman, that bespeaks of a life of sacrifice, dedication, hard work, wisdom, love, respect, humility that brings forth honor. Proverbs 14:23 reminds us that, “In all labor there is profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty”. It is the high time that we are called to put into practice these valuable lessons and our good God will greatly reward us.
