THEME: A NEW THING
1 Kings 17:11-14
“And as she was going to get it, he called to her and said, “Please bring me a morsel of bread in your hand.” So she said, “As the LORD your God lives, I do not have bread, only a handful of flour in a bin, and a little oil in a jar; and see, I am gathering a couple of sticks that I may go in and prepare it for myself and my son, that we may eat it, and die.” And Elijah said to her, “Do not fear; go and do as you have said, but make me a small cake from it first, and bring it to me; and afterward make some for yourself and your son. For thus says the LORD God of Israel: ‘The bin of flour shall not be used up, nor shall the jar of oil run dry, until the day the LORD sends rain on the earth.”
INSIGHT
-The Lord did a new thing for the widow of Zarephath. The brook of Kerith Ravine dried up, where Elijah was supernaturally fed by ravens and the Lord sent him to the widow of Zarephath. Ironically, she had a handful of floor and a little oil which could only be enough for one meal. She had lost faith and reported that once her and her son eat, they would die. At Elijah’s request she prepared a meal for him first and her jar of floor and jug of oil never run dry. Despite her desperate situation, she gathered courage within herself and had faith, and the Lord restored her. It is a time that the Lord is doing a new thing in our lives. Let us put on our faith in Him and be ready to receive from Him, and He will surely sustain us.
SUMMARY
Planarian worms also known as creepy crawlers, are famous for their regeneration abilities. The worm cut across or lengthwise can form two separate worms according to a research done by the University of Nottingham. This apparently limitless regeneration also applies to aging and damaged tissue, and cells in a bid to understand the mechanisms underlying their longevity. The planarian worms have unique abilities to regenerate physically which gives us the analogy of renewal, perseverance and keeping our faith as Christians. For regeneration to take place, transformation from the old must occur. For a new thing to be effected, the old must die. 2 Corinthians 5:17-18 reveals that, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation:” It is through the death of Christ that we have been made a new creation in Him. Our faith in pegged on total reliance on Christ, who calls us to take up our crosses and follow Him. It is through dying to self and submitting our will to God’s will, that a new thing is formed in our lives. Ephesians 4:22-24 reminds us to put off our old self which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires and to be made new in the attitude of our minds, and to put on the new self created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. The same message was communicated to the Israelites through prophet Isaiah after the Babylonian captivity. They were instructed to forget the former things for the Lord is doing a new thing (Isaiah 43:18-21). We sometimes need to get rid of old memories, habits and other past traditions to walk with God. To be freed from our past burdens, can need to take advantage of the present and future. The mind has a destructive power of yesterday but God is calling us to focus on His goodness and love. The widow of Zarephath received the grace of God and a supernatural increase even when she had lost all hope. The man at the pool of Bethesda received supernatural healing after waiting for thirty eight years. God requires us to believe in Him despite the challenges that we might be going through and step into our mandates. He has put a new song in our mouths this year, let us rejoice for He is doing a new thing in our lives. He is refreshing us, renewing us and regenerating us in His love and purposes. Like the planarian worm whose lifespan is not well known, for scientists describe it as an eternal creature due to the regeneration abilities. Let us have faith in Jesus Christ who has given us eternal life in Him. Let us not loose hope but believe that we will see Him as He is when He comes again and dwell with Him forever in the New Jerusalem.
