THEME: SANDAL

Ruth 4:5‭-‬7 ‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

Then Boaz said, “On the day you buy the field from the hand of Naomi, you must also buy it from Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of the dead, to perpetuate the name of the dead through his inheritance.” And the close relative said, “I cannot redeem it for myself, lest I ruin my own inheritance. You redeem my right of redemption for yourself, for I cannot redeem it. ” Now this was the custom in former times in Israel concerning redeeming and exchanging, to confirm anything: one man took off his sandal and gave it to the other, and this was a confirmation in Israel.

INSIGHT
-When Boaz sought to marry Ruth, he was bound by traditions to ask for redemption rights from his brother who was the nearest redeemer. According to Lev 25:25-34, a kinsman redeemer must have been related by blood, be able to pay the price, be willing to redeem and be free himself, like Christ redeemed us from our sin. If a man passed on without having bore a son; his brother would inherit his wife to perpetuate his name. But if he was not willing; the brothers wife would spit on his face and take of his sandals, and his name would be called “the one who had his sandals removed” (Deu 25:5-10). Naomi had to be redeemed before Ruth and Boaz chose to be the kinsman redeemer to perpetuate the name of the dead through inheritance. His close relative then removed his sandals as oath and asked Boaz to redeem his right of redemption. Sandals were used to establish an oath in this law regulating redemption of property and redemption rights. Ruth abandoned her culture, people and language to follow Yahweh; the God of Naomi and her efforts were not in vain. Gods’ providential care brought her to Boaz who exercised his rights as kinsman redeemer and became her husband; and they were blessed with a son Obed; who can be traced in the lineage of Jesus. When Ruth was a widow; God showed her abundant love and blessed her with a family. When Ruth was a Gentile; she was incorporated in the lineage of Jesus yielding eternal life through Him. These evidences provide hope for us all who share in the inheritance of the Kingdom of God through faith in Christ. God is full of mercy and love and as He rewarded Ruth for her loyalty; we too have the hope of receiving blessings and an eternal reward through Christ.

PRAYER
Jehovah our Redeemer, the Lord of hosts is Your name, the Holy One of Israel, we praise You and magnify Your holy name. Show mercy Lord to all widows that You may settle their hearts in Your providential care. Be with all ladies who are waiting on You for marriage that You may bless them with good families. Shine Your face Lord also on all men who seek to marry that You may guide them through this endeavour. Christ You gave Yourself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for Yourself a people that are Your very own to eager to do what is good; we thank You for loving us. Bless us indeed Lord and expand our territories, and answer our prayers for the glory of Your name. We praise You Jesus and glorify Your holy name; now and forever. Amen
