THEME: POWER OF UNITY

John 17:20-23 NIV

“My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one— I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.”

INSIGHT

-Jesus spoke of His mission and sanctification to the body of Christ. He was confident that they would continue in the evangelism mission, and prayed for those who would believe, and all future believers are included in this prayer. Also an emphasis has been made on the unity of believers, hedging on the standard of the unity between the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirt, as it is from the beginning. The unity of believers should also impact outsiders to believe in Jesus Christ and follow Him faithfully.

SUMMARY

Unity by simple definition is the state of oneness. It causes different units to be joined together in agreement. God is the perfect model of unity, having been joined together as the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:19). God calls us to one body, one Spirit, and one hope (Ephesians 4:4). The unity in the body of Christ should therefore testify to the unity of God’s eternality, the Holy Trinity. The body of Christ should also testify to the unity of the gospel message, since we are called to one hope of salvation. King Hezekiah called all Israel and Judah to be united in worship to God the Most High as they observe the Passover feast which had not be done for sometime, and it pleased the people (2 Chronicles 30:11-12 ). Whenever a people fellowship as one, the Lord is present with them. Unity is key in every relationship. For instance, a man leaves his father and mother, and he is united to his wife and they become one flesh (Ephesians 5:31 ). Also, two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour (Ecclesiastics 4:9). Where there is such unity whatever we purpose to do cannot be hindered from us (Genesis 11:6). Jesus preached the gospel of peace to both those who are far and those who are near (Ephesians 2:17). He calls us to love one another and to forgive one another just as Christ forgave us. Where there is unity, God commands a blessings. It is therefore good and pleasant that we have bonds of love with one another and remain in perfect unity with Christ through the gift of salvation.
