THEME: THE SEA-SHORE
1 Kings 4:29-34
“God gave Solomon wisdom and very great insight, and a breadth of understanding as measureless as the sand on the seashore. Solomon’s wisdom was greater than the wisdom of all the people of the East, and greater than all the wisdom of Egypt. He was wiser than anyone else, including Ethan the Ezrahite—wiser than Heman, Kalkol and Darda, the sons of Mahol. And his fame spread to all the surrounding nations. He spoke three thousand proverbs and his songs numbered a thousand and five. He spoke about plant life, from the cedar of Lebanon to the hyssop that grows out of walls. He also spoke about animals and birds, reptiles and fish. From all nations people came to listen to Solomon’s wisdom, sent by all the kings of the world, who had heard of his wisdom.”
INSIGHT
-God gave king Solomon great and incomparable wisdom like sand on the seashore, after he sacrificed a thousand burnt offerings on the altar in Gibeon, and he requested for wisdom, and God increased him in wealth, honor and long life (1 kings 3:5-14). People from all the nations came to listen to him, from the East, probably Paddan Aram or Mesopotamia (Genesis 29:1) which was rich in literature, and from the west; probably Arabia (Jeremiah 49:28, Ezekiel 25:10) which was rich in trade. Egypt was not left out, having great wisdom in reading, writing, orator and administrative skills, where Moses was educated in all the wisdom of the Egyptians and was powerful in speech and action (Acts 7:22). Queen of Sheba was also among those who went to listen to king Solomon’s wisdom, and there was no one greater in wisdom until Jesus came (Luke 11:31). Wisdom is supreme, and in all our getting we are called to get it (Proverbs 4:7). Like king Solomon who applied his great wisdom to govern God’s people, we are reminded to apply wisdom in our areas of influence, and become the best as each one is called; to accomplish our purpose, for the glory of God.
