Then Noah built an altar to the Lord, and took of every clean animal and of every clean bird, and offered burnt offerings on the altar. And the Lord smelled a soothing aroma. Then the Lord said in His heart, “I will never again curse the ground for man’s sake, although the imagination of man’s heart is evil from his youth; nor will I again destroy every living thing as I have done.
-Sacrifice is written as zebach in Hebrew & means slaughter, immolate, vow, feast, offering, gift, tribute & oblation.
-Sacrifices can be classified into two, those that involved pouring of blood & those that did not. The ones that involved blood include: – burnt offerings, peace offerings & sin offerings. The other class includes: – first fruit & tithes, meat & drink offerings & incense. The first class defined animals of sacrifice as either clean or unclean. Noah took seven of every clean animal & two of each unclean animal, male & female into the ark. He only sacrificed clean animals to God which was pleasing to Him. After this, only clean animals were given to man for food & later in the New Testament, both clean & unclean animals were permitted.
-Just as Noah’s sacrifice had a soothing aroma, Christ; Who was without sin offered Himself as a sacrifice & offering to God for a sweet-smelling aroma in His love for us by dying for our sins, that we may also walk in love emulating His word (Eph 5:2).
We give You thanks Father for we have begun a new week in perfect health. We thank You for Your love for us & for offering Yourself for our salvation. We humbly ask You to cleanse us from all unrighteousness & help us in all our challenges. Help us to walk in Your love that our lives may always produce a sweet-smelling aroma for Your name sake. There is no one like You Father, we praise You & worship You; forever. Amen
They have turned aside quickly out of the way which I commanded them. They have made themselves a molded calf, and worshiped it and sacrificed to it, and said, ‘This is your god, O Israel, that brought you out of the land of Egypt!’”
-The Israelites made a golden calf, worshipped it & sacrificed to it under the leadership of Aaron. In the same way Oholah & Oholibah sacrificed their own children to their idols on the Lords sanctuary & defiled it (Ezek 23:36-39). This was a common practice among the Gentile communities who were excluded from the Abrahamic covenant of God made for him & his descendants. Apostle Paul discloses that the Gentiles always sacrificed to demons & not God for they did not know Him (1 Cor 10:20). Further, that they were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel & strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope & without God in the world. But now through the blood of Christ, Gentiles who were far off have been brought near in Him (Eph 2:12-13).
We humbly implore You Father, thanking You for uniting the whole world by Your blood. By the same blood cleanse the whole world from idolatry of sacrifice to other gods & idolatry of our hearts. May we be united by Your divine peace at all times that Your goodness & mercy may follow us all the days of our lives. Amen
But I will sacrifice to You With the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay what I have vowed. Salvation is of the Lord.” So the Lord spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.
-Prophet Jonah was in trouble & finally humbled himself in submission to do Gods will. He knew the key to preservation was thanksgiving & obedience. He prayed with an expectation of salvation & deliverance from the mouth of the fish. The condition of his release was to offer thanksgiving to the Lord & take heed his pending assignment. During the time of Moses, the sacrifice of thanksgiving was tied to the peace offering. It was a voluntary sacrifice where the people offered cakes, unleavened bread & the priest could sprinkle blood on the altar, making it a binding covenant (Lev 7:12-15). Later the Lord instructed that, whoever offers praise glorifies Me & to him who orders his conduct aright, I will show My salvation (Psa 50:23).
Salvation belongs to You only Father, the creator of heaven & earth. We humbly come before You asking You to order our steps that we may always be inclined to do Your will. Be with all those who are sick, suffering & in other difficult situations. Bless us, our families, friends, leaders & nation, that Your peace may always dwell within us. There is no other God like You, we praise You & give You thanks. Amen
1 Peter 2:4-5
Coming to Him as to a living stone, rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God and precious, you also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
-Just as it was Gods initial intention to make us a chosen people, a royal priesthood & a holy nation, we are called to offer sacrifices not material like goats & sheep on the altar of sacrifice, but spiritual in nature. That is; giving oneself to God in obedience & doing His will. As a holy priesthood, we are built upon Christ the High Priest & as living stones we are built on Christ the Chief cornerstone. In our spiritual nature, we share in the nature of Christ & His righteousness for our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit Who lives in us. When we are inclined to His will, our minds are renewed & character moulded according to His purpose. Further, we are called to continually offer sacrifices that are well pleasing to God, that is, praising, giving thanks, uttering words that edify Christ, doing good & sharing what we have with others (Heb 13:15-16).
We surrender our hearts to You Father, take complete control of our lives. You created us in Your image & likeness, may our spiritual sacrifices be acceptable to You. Renew our minds, hearts & spirit that we may be well pleasing sons of Your Kingdom. We praise You & give You thanks, now & forever. Amen
Then He said to them all, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will save it. For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and is himself destroyed or lost?
-We should always remember that we were bought at a price & should glorify God in our bodies & in spirit, which are His (1 Cor 6:20). Jesus emphasizes on personal sacrifice, obedience & seeking His mercy in our daily live, which is better than sacrifice. Just as Christ sacrificed His life for us, we are called in humility to sacrifice for ourselves, for one another & for God as instruments of love & peace here on earth.
-Sacrifice can be defined as an act of killing animals, people or surrendering possessions as an offering to a deity. It is also giving up something for the sake of a better cause. It can be classified into two, those that involve pouring of blood & those that do not. In the Old Testament, only clean animals were offered for different functions like peace, forgiveness of sin, first-fruit etc. Since the Gentile communities were excluded from the Abrahamic covenant of God made for him & his descendants, they sacrificed to demons for they did not know God. They were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel & strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope & without God in the world. But now through the blood of Christ, Gentiles who were far off have been brought near in Him. In our spiritual nature, we are built upon Christ the High Priest & Chief cornerstone in holy priesthood & as living stones. Therefore, we share in the nature of Christ & His righteousness for our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit Who lives in us. When we are inclined to His will, our minds are renewed & character molded according to His purpose. We are also called to continually offer sacrifices that are well pleasing to God, including praise, thanksgiving & in our words & deeds of sharing what we have with others. Christ offered Himself as a sacrifice & offering to God for a sweet-smelling aroma in His love for us by dying for our sins, that we may also walk in love emulating His word. He promises that, whoever praises Him glorifies His name & to him who orders his conduct aright, He will administer His salvation.
Oh Lord our Father, creator of heaven & earth, Who will come to judge the living & the dead, have mercy on us. Give us the graces to keep You at the center of our lives, to love & forgive one another as You always cleanse us our failings too. You know each one of us by name, renew our strength & satisfy our needs. Uphold our hands to be generous to those who need us most. All glory, honor, power & praise belong to You. Amen
