Luke 18:10-14 NKJV

“Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, ‘God, I thank You that I am not like other men—extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I possess.’ And the tax collector, standing afar off, would not so much as raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me a sinner!’ I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

INSIGHT

–Jesus contrasts the self-righteousness of a Pharisee who boasts about his religious deeds with the humble confession of a tax collector who acknowledges his sinfulness and dependence on God’s mercy. Jesus teaches that true righteousness comes not from self-exaltation or observing religious rules, but from a humble heart that depends on God’s grace, leading the humble to be justified before God.

PRAYER

We give thanks to You, O God; we give thanks, for Your name is near. We recount Your wondrous deeds. We give thanks to You Lord due to Your righteousness, and sing praise to Your name Lord, Most High. Dear Lord Jesus, You say in Your word, If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us, but if we confess our sins, Lord You are faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. Dear Lord Jesus You are the Light of our salvation, may You fill us afresh and enable us to walk in the light. Grant us hearts of humility that we may fear You and submit to Your will. Amen
